At NH Business Consulting, our view is that whatever your vision, may it be for self-employment or a part-time endeavor, you should be able to generate enough income to be cashflow positive.  As societal safety nets are disappearing, your business venture should not, excluding perhaps for initial startup costs, diminish your financial stability or your ability to take care of yourself and your family. 

The goal is not to make $5 million or $10 million in revenues. The goal is to have a business that earns a profit after expenses, debts and taxes have been paid. And more importantly that profit should also be sufficient to pay you enough that you can grow your financial nest egg and prepare for the future. 

We constantly see examples of business owners who expend much effort and time for very little return. There are plenty of cash movements in and out of bank accounts and credit cards but, in the end, there is little cash left over once the bills are paid. Most entrepreneurs, being a tough lot, keep pushing ahead despite experiencing losses while cutting corners and limiting their take-home pay. 

In consultation with our clients, we regularly discuss the cost / benefit analysis of entrepreneurship versus pursuing work in a more traditional role with another company. Taking stock of the financial performance of your company and your financial payback is key to ensuring that the operational and financial risks you take as an entrepreneur continue to be appropriate and worthwhile.
